Cut pile or loop pile?
A cut pile is the safer starting point where claws may snag. Cormar specifically advises choosing cut pile over loop pile for homes with pets because claws can catch exposed loops.
That does not make every cut-pile carpet suitable. Deep, very soft piles may hold hair or show tracking, while a dense twist can be easier to manage in a busy route. Compare actual samples.
Which fibre is easiest to clean?
Many polypropylene ranges are stain resistant and some are approved for cleaning with a diluted bleach solution. Use only the exact instructions for the carpet: bleach-cleanable marketing is not permission to improvise the concentration or apply bleach to wool.
Deal with accidents promptly using the manufacturer's method. Over-wetting or aggressive rubbing can damage backing and pile even when the fibre itself resists stains.
Choose a practical colour and texture
Very dark or very light plain carpet can show contrasting hair, lint and paw marks. A heathered, flecked or softly patterned tone may disguise everyday debris between cleaning.
Take a sample home and place a small amount of brushed pet hair on it. Check it in daylight and evening light, then vacuum the sample using the recommended head.
Underlay, fitting and transitions
A suitable underlay supports the carpet and can reduce impact noise from paws, but it cannot make the room soundproof. Secure fitting and neat door transitions reduce loose edges that an animal might investigate.

Maintenance before buying
Read the vacuum guidance, stain exclusions and warranty conditions. Loop piles often call for suction-only cleaning, while some deep piles need an adjustable-height head. If a pet has repeated accidents, address odour and moisture below the carpet as well as the visible surface.

- Confirm the exact product name, construction, colour and selected width or length.
- Read the current manufacturer specification, room-suitability information, fitting method and warranty conditions.
- Measure the physical layout rather than relying only on square metres, and ask the fitter to approve quantities and joins.
- Check the subfloor, doors, transitions, stairs and any underfloor-heating requirements.

Keep the sample and order confirmation until fitting is complete. Product photographs are useful for recognition, but screens and lighting can change colour.
