Choose carpet colour in the room where it will be fitted. Screen images and showroom lighting are useful for making a shortlist, but a physical sample reveals how the pile, texture and colour behave beside your walls, furniture and adjoining floors.

Start with practical limits
Decide the required use rating, fibre, cleaning needs and budget before refining colour. This prevents choosing a shade in a carpet that is unsuitable for the room.
Order several close alternatives rather than unrelated colours. A warm beige, neutral greige and cool grey can look surprisingly different beside the same wall.
View samples through a full day
Place samples flat on the floor, not vertically against the wall. Check them in direct and indirect daylight, then again under the room's evening lighting.
Move them between the centre and edges of the room. Shadows, windows and reflected wall colour can alter the appearance.
Account for pile direction and shading
Cut-pile carpets can appear lighter or darker as fibres lean and reflect light. Brush each sample both ways and view it from the main entrance. Footprints and vacuum marks may be more visible on deep, smooth piles.
This natural visual movement is different from a colour mismatch. Ask the manufacturer or retailer about expected shading for the chosen construction.
Match the whole room
Compare the carpet with skirting, doors, sofa fabric, curtains and fixed cabinetry. At doorways, include the adjoining flooring and proposed door bar.
Large uninterrupted areas can make a colour feel stronger than a small sample. If available, view a larger sample or an installed photograph, while remembering that another room's lighting will differ.
Confirm the final product details
Before ordering, confirm the exact range, colour name, width, pile direction and quantity. Different production batches can vary, so order the required area together and ask how batch consistency is handled.

- Measure the physical layout rather than relying only on square metres, and ask the fitter to approve quantities and joins.
- Check the subfloor, doors, transitions, stairs and any underfloor-heating requirements.
