Carpet backing affects stability, handling and the fitting methods available, but the label alone does not determine quality. Action backing, felt backing and manufacturer-specific fleece or combination systems can all perform well when the carpet is installed by an approved method over a suitable floor.

What is carpet backing?
The visible pile is held in a primary construction and supported by material on the reverse. Retail names usually refer to the secondary backing or complete backing system. It helps give the carpet dimensional stability and provides the surface used during fitting.
Two carpets with similar-looking backings can have different use ratings, tog values and fitting instructions. Always read the specification for the exact range.
Action backing
Action backing is a woven-looking secondary backing commonly used with stretch-fit carpet over separate underlay and gripper. It provides a firm structure for tensioning, but it does not mean that every action-backed carpet uses identical underlay or fitting details.
Ask the fitter to confirm seam preparation, gripper gap and underlay. A good backing cannot compensate for a damp or uneven subfloor.
Felt backing
Felt-backed carpets are sometimes marketed as suitable for direct fitting, while many installations still use underlay for comfort, support or to meet the carpet specification. The available methods vary by product.
Direct fitting is not automatically cheaper once floor preparation and adhesive are considered. It also changes the removal process. Compare the complete installation rather than choosing solely to avoid underlay.
Fleece and combination systems
Manufacturers use fleece, textile and combination backings under their own product names. These may be designed for easier handling, flexibility or particular installation methods. A soft-looking reverse does not prove that a carpet can be loose laid.
Use the exact technical information and warranty terms. If the product page and a generic backing guide differ, follow the product manufacturer.

Final checks before ordering
- Confirm the exact product name, construction, colour and selected width or length.
- Read the current manufacturer specification, room-suitability information, fitting method and warranty conditions.
- Measure the physical layout rather than relying only on square metres, and ask the fitter to approve quantities and joins.
- Check the subfloor, doors, transitions, stairs and any underfloor-heating requirements.
- Review the current CFS product page for delivery coverage, pack sizes and selectable options before payment.
Keep the sample and order confirmation until fitting is complete. Product photographs are useful for recognition, but screens and lighting can change colour. Where the retailer page, a general guide and the exact manufacturer's instructions differ, obtain confirmation for the product being installed.

Is action backing better than felt?
Neither is universally better. Action backing is widely used for stretch fitting; felt can offer other options. Compare the complete carpet specification and intended installation.
Does felt-backed carpet need underlay?
Sometimes it can be fitted without separate underlay, but that is product-specific. Underlay may still be recommended for performance, comfort or warranty compliance.
Can action-backed carpet be glued down?
Only where the manufacturer and adhesive system approve that installation. Do not infer adhesive suitability from appearance.
Which backing is best for stairs?
Choose a carpet explicitly suitable for stairs and the planned fitting method. Pile and use rating are at least as important as backing.
