For most carpeted stairs, landings and busy hallways, the best starting point is a dense, resilient underlay that the manufacturer recommends for stairs or heavy traffic. Maximum thickness is not the goal. The underlay needs to recover after repeated compression, support the carpet and suit the intended fitting method.

Tredaire Treadmore is a particularly clear example. It is a 7.95mm crumb-rubber underlay with a published density of 390kg/m³, and Interfloor specifically recommends it for stairs, landings, heavy furniture and high-footfall areas. It feels firmer than a soft luxury foam, but that is often an advantage on the hardest-working routes through a home.

That does not mean crumb rubber is the only acceptable answer. A high-density PU or sponge-rubber underlay can also work well when its specification confirms that it is suitable for the expected use. The key is to compare the product’s intended-use rating, density, recovery and fitting method—not just the material name or thickness.

These are practical starting points rather than universal rules. The carpet, subfloor and installation method still need to be considered.

Why stairs and hallways are demanding

In a bedroom, foot traffic is spread over much of the floor. On a staircase or through a hallway, people repeatedly follow almost the same route. Stairs add concentrated pressure at the front of each tread, where feet land and turn as people move between levels.

The carpet therefore needs stable support beneath it. An underlay that is too soft for the application can allow excessive movement and may flatten more quickly along the main traffic path. A suitable product should compress underfoot and then recover, rather than simply feeling deep when it is first fitted.

Is crumb-rubber underlay best for stairs?

Crumb rubber is often the strongest place to begin. It is made from dense rubber granules bonded into a firm sheet. Compared with many lightweight foams, it normally gives a more solid feel and strong resistance to repeated compression.

Those characteristics suit stairs, landings, hallways and rooms containing heavy furniture. Crumb rubber is not automatically superior to every other material, but products such as Treadmore and System Ten have specifications aimed squarely at demanding use.

There are trade-offs. Crumb-rubber rolls are heavy, the feel is firmer than a thick luxury foam, and different products support different fitting methods. Check the individual specification rather than assuming that every rubber underlay is interchangeable.

Can PU foam be used on stairs?

Yes, provided the particular product is suitable for the level of use. PU foam is lighter to handle and often feels more cushioned than crumb rubber, which makes it appealing when the same underlay will continue from a landing into adjoining rooms.

Quality varies considerably within the category. A high-density PU underlay designed for demanding use is not comparable with a very soft, low-density foam chosen purely for depth. Tredaire Chromium, for example, is a 9mm high-density PU product with a published density of 180kg/m³ and 42dB impact-sound reduction. It offers a more cushioned alternative while retaining a strong specification.

Material alone is not a quality grade. The same principle applies to sponge rubber and combination felt-and-rubber products: they can be appropriate when the manufacturer’s use classification and fitting instructions suit the staircase. What thickness underlay is best for stairs?

There is no single compulsory thickness. Products around 7mm to 10mm are common among firm, heavy-duty options, but the range itself is not a rule. Treadmore is 7.95mm, System Ten is 9.2mm and Chromium is 9mm; their construction and intended use matter more than the small difference in depth.

An 11mm or 12mm underlay is not automatically wrong, but extra thickness should not be mistaken for extra durability. Before choosing a deeper product, confirm that it is recommended for stairs, works with the carpet and leaves an appropriate finished height at the landing and adjoining doorways.

For a stair runner, also consider how the runner, underlay and exposed edges will be finished. The fitter may specify a particular construction or thickness to achieve a neat, stable result.

Which specifications matter most?

1. Intended use

Start with the manufacturer’s recommendation. Wording such as suitable for stairs, heavy domestic use or heavy contract use is more useful than a general claim that an underlay is “premium” or “luxury”.

2. Density and recovery

Density indicates how much material is contained within a given volume. Within the same type of underlay, a denser construction will usually feel firmer. However, density figures should not be compared blindly across different materials because crumb rubber, sponge rubber and PU foam have different structures.

Recovery is the practical ability to rebound after compression. It is especially important on stairs and in hallways because the same areas are loaded repeatedly.

3. Fitting method

Check whether the product is intended for stretch-fit, single-stick or double-stick installation. Treadmore is specified for stretch-fit carpet installation. System Ten supports stretch-fit and adhesive-based methods, subject to its installation conditions. The fitter and carpet specification should determine the method; do not substitute one simply because the underlay appears similar.

4. Sound reduction

Impact-sound figures can be useful where footsteps travel into rooms below. They are laboratory ratings, however, and the result in a particular home also depends on the floor structure, carpet and installation. For stairs, suitability and recovery should usually be considered before chasing the highest decibel figure.

5. Tog rating

A higher tog can help resist heat loss through an unheated floor, but it is not desirable above underfloor heating. If a hallway contains a heated floor, check the combined allowance for the carpet and underlay and choose a compatible low-tog product. Treadmore is our most straightforward recommendation for a conventional carpeted domestic staircase because its manufacturer explicitly identifies stairs, landings and high foot traffic as intended applications. System Ten is denser and more versatile in fitting method, but that does not mean every home needs the heavier specification. Chromium is worth comparing when a high-density PU feel is preferred.

Can you use the same underlay on the stairs and hallway?

Usually, yes. Using one suitable product across the stairs, landing and hallway creates a consistent finished height and feel. It also simplifies ordering and gives the fitter one specification to work with.

Different underlays can be used where the requirements genuinely differ. For example, an unheated staircase might use dense crumb rubber while an adjoining hallway over underfloor heating needs a specialist low-tog product. Plan the transition carefully so the carpet heights and door bars remain appropriate.

How much underlay do stairs need?

For a rough estimate on a straight staircase, measure the width of the carpeted area. Calculate the total tread area by multiplying the tread depth by the number of treads, then calculate the total riser area by multiplying the riser height by the number of risers. Add those figures together and multiply the result by the carpeted width. Measure the landing separately and include an allowance for cutting and roll layout.

Turning steps, winders, split landings and runners should be measured individually. With a runner, use the runner width rather than the full wall-to-wall staircase width. Roll widths also affect how efficiently pieces can be cut, so confirm the measurement with the fitter before ordering.

Fitting matters as much as the product

A well-specified underlay cannot compensate for a loose or poorly fitted stair carpet. The underlay must be installed using the method for which it was designed, and the carpet needs to be secured and tensioned correctly around each tread, riser and nosing.

Staircases are less forgiving than flat rooms. If you are uncertain about the carpet, gripper layout, seams or fitting method, use an experienced carpet fitter and follow the carpet and underlay manufacturers’ instructions.
